Bangsar South, KL

I started with just the Atmosphere Assessment because I wasn't sure I was ready for a full project. The written observations were surprisingly specific — things about the afternoon light in my living room that I'd noticed but couldn't articulate. It helped me understand the space before I'd even decided what to do with it.

Damansara Heights, KL

We commissioned the full Design Package for a recently purchased terrace in Damansara. What I appreciated most was how Nadia kept asking what we actually wanted to feel when we came home — not what we wanted it to look like. The 3D visualisations were detailed enough that we had total confidence before renovation started.

Serena managed the whole build phase for us and honestly it was a relief. I've heard stories from friends about renovation becoming a full-time job. Ours didn't. We got updates, we knew what was happening, and by the end the apartment felt exactly like what we'd seen in the visualisations — which I wasn't entirely sure was possible.

I came in thinking I just needed new furniture. After the Atmosphere Assessment, I realised the issue was the lighting — the furniture was mostly fine. That kind of honesty about what actually needed attention is exactly what I was looking for. We've since done a more focused intervention and the room is completely different.

My partner and I have quite different tastes. What Oku Atelier did really well was find the overlap — there were a few conversations that felt more like mediation than briefing, in a good way. The final design had both of us genuinely excited. I think that's harder than it sounds.

The pricing is transparent which I appreciate. I knew what the service cost, I knew what the materials would cost separately, and I was never asked to decide anything without understanding what it was for. It made the whole process feel manageable rather than something to worry about.

Project Stories

Three projects in detail

Challenge

Bangsar condo — dark, fragmented rooms

A two-bedroom unit on a low floor with limited natural light. The original layout divided the living and dining areas awkwardly, creating two rooms that felt neither functional nor restful.

Approach

Atmospheric Design Package — 7 weeks

Spatial replanning to open the living and dining areas into a single light-focused space. Materials selected for light reflectivity. Lighting designed in three separate layers to allow different modes across the day.

Outcome

A space that feels larger and lighter

The owners report spending significantly more time at home, and describe the apartment as finally feeling like it belongs to them. No structural work — only material and layout changes.

Challenge

Damansara terrace — renovation without direction

A couple had purchased a 1980s terrace and were beginning renovations with multiple contractors and no design brief. Work had begun in the bathrooms but the living areas were undefined.

Approach

Assessment + Design Package — 9 weeks

An Atmosphere Assessment first, then a full design package that gave contractors a consistent specification across all rooms. Coordinated material selections so the house read as one considered space, not a series of unrelated decisions.

Outcome

Cohesive character through a large property

Renovation completed with far fewer on-site variations than originally anticipated. The owners moved in without significant remedial work, which is not always the case for projects of this scope.

Challenge

Boutique guesthouse — too commercial a feel

A small guesthouse in Bangsar had been designed with standard hospitality fixtures and felt more like a budget hotel than the neighbourhood stay experience the owner intended.

Approach

Atmospheric Design Package + Build Support — 12 weeks

Selective removal of generic elements. Replacement with locally sourced textiles, furniture from Malaysian makers, and lighting that created warmth rather than utility. Maintained the Bangsar neighbourhood character throughout.

Outcome

Guest satisfaction measurably improved

The guesthouse saw a notable shift in guest feedback within three months of reopening — with atmosphere and character among the most frequently mentioned qualities in reviews.
